Sara's Family

Sara grew up in the city of Ibarra. It is very old. The whole area was populated by indigenous grouand is the capitol of the province. Her parents have lived in this house for about 12 years. Her father told me he and his wife have lived in and around Ibarra all their lives. Presently, the parents live with two of their grown, unmarried children and the other five live elsewhere with their nuclear families. We were here for four days and met many of the family. It is a great bunch of people.
Hugo is the family dog. We all loved him. Lived especially. One night Liz, Sara and I went for a walk around the nighborhood and Hugo went with us. He is also all male and would leave for a day or two at a time, just to go see chicas.

I had a chance to learn how to make rolls using the old family methods and procedures. The final product is a nice, small sandwich roll.

Sara's father, Marco, is a locally known, famous woodcarver. He also collaborates on projects with Roberto, his son, who frequently paints the carvings. He is making a special carving for us as a present to bring home.
The local neighborhood is something. Most of the houses here are on abut 5 acres. All have large gardens, livestock and little lanes between them. Most have very ancient walls, some at least a couple of hundred years old with gorgeous funky old gates. Many of the walls are adobe. They are in amazingly good shape considering the rain and their age. There are also little canals that bring snow melt down from the surrounding mountains. Where ever we walked, we hard the sound of gurgling.
