Lago Cuicocha is a caldera in the to of an active volcano. The basin was formed when the top collased, creating a creater that filled with water. It is very deep, about 600 feet in most areas and there are spots where no bottom has been located. There are no fish due to sulpher bubbling up from the volcano. It could go off again at any time.. . .. I'll add more pictures to this page later.
These pictures are of a group of indigenous people, "Los Morochos". There are many local groups and are in ritual conflict with each other over a pool of money the local Catholic church collects every year. The group that gains 'control' of the church first, gets the money. Consequently, every year there is a riot between the various groups. It gets serious too. There are big street rights where the groups throw rocks at each other, hence the large, heavy hats. The police interviened in the fight that took place. This year there were three people killed in the melee. We tried to get close enough to see it, but the tear gas and crowds running away kept us at a distance. I have video of this group marching.
